PADI
Open Water Diver Course Outline
What does it cover?
The PADI Open Water Diver course is, by far, the world’s
most popular scuba certification course. Millions of people
have started diving as certified PADI Open Water Divers.
Learning to scuba dive requires both knowledge development
(facts, principles, concepts) and motor procedures (skills,
techniques, methods). The PADI Open Water Diver Course
provides the knowledge development portion you need. You
develop the remaining skills by actually diving with a PADI
Instructor at Niagara Scuba Center your local PADI Dive
Center.
Open
Water Scuba Diver
The PADI
Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba
certification course. Learning to scuba dive requires both
knowledge development (facts, principles, concepts) and
motor procedures (skills, techniques, methods). You’ll gain
the foundation skills and knowledge to dive with a buddy
independent of supervision.
This course is your first diving certification level and is
comprised of 3 levels, the knowledge development, confined
water dives in our own in-house pool and the open water
certification dives.
We encourage independent study for knowledge development
before class begins. You will watch the DVD, read your PADI
open Water Manual, and complete all knowledge reviews in
the manual before your class begins.
When the class meets we will review any questions you may
have, and spend the time needed to ensure your questions
have been answered.
Then it’s off to the pool! The 5 confined water sessions
will bring your skills along to ensure your comfort with
the skills you will need for the open water certification.
Finally it’s time for your open water dives – where you
will demonstrate to your instructor in 4 dives over 2 days,
what you have learned the confined water sessions. You’ll
have a lot of fun over the entire process, and when you
complete your certification, you’ll have a PADI Open Water
Diver certification Card, recognized world wide.
The group classes for classroom and pool sessions are
normally done at Niagara Scuba Center’s own facilities. We

Discover Scuba Diving
The PADI
Discover Scuba Diving program introduces people to scuba
diving in a highly supervised and relaxed manner. It
dispels common misconceptions about scuba by letting
individuals try it for themselves. Under the guidance of a
PADI professional, new divers learn basic safety concepts,
put on equipment and swim around underwater in a closely
supervised environment. The PADI Discover Scuba Diving
program can take place in a swimming pool, or at an open
water dive site — anywhere an appropriate, positive
introduction to scuba diving is possible.
After trying scuba, many new divers may decide to repeat
the experience, if not immediately, then on other occasions
or in different areas. Others will choose to pursue
certification by enrolling in a PADI Scuba Diver or Open
Water Diver course. The desired result is to excite people
about scuba diving and encourage additional participation.
When certain requirements are met, new divers may earn
credit toward PADI Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver
certification.

Rescue Diver
Challenging
and rewarding best describes the PADI Rescue Diver course.
This course will expand your knowledge and experience
level. Rescue Divers learn to look beyond themselves and
consider the safety and well being of other divers.
Although this course is challenging, it is a rewarding way
to build your confidence.
You’ll start with independent study for knowledge
development from the PADI Rescue Diver Manual. Read the
book, watch the DVD, complete your knowledge reviews then
meet in the class to ensure mastery of the book concepts
and discuss how to handle different scenarios.
The most fun – and the most exhausting – part of the class:
Your open water dives. Scenarios that will be completed
over two days will teach you how to handle everything from
a tired diver to covering diving emergencies and first aid.
You’ll practice each skill until you have the comfort and
knowledge needed to handle the problems you’ll encounter.
